Football Including Refugees in Europe

Many volunteers in clubs and associations all across Europe have already launched small projects and initiatives to help refugees, migrants and asylum-seekers integrating through football clubs. Many other would like to, but are unsure how to go about it

The FIRE Mooc aims to understand all the steps involved in setting up a project to include refugees through football. It is free, online and interactive.

What is a Mooc ?

A mooc is an online multimedia course and easily accessible to any interested person who wishes to acquire knowledge and skills in a specific field.

Learning objectives and Certification

By the end of the course, you will be able to use your football activity in order to help refugees to better integrate in their new home country.

This learning objective will be achieved through different types of input:

You will gain more insight and understanding about refugees and the different challenges of their integration process, thanks to the explanations of experts in the field;

Practical skills and methods for all stages of a successful football initiative with refugees will be developed by both experts and other football volunteers who share their experience;

A large number of testimonies and examples from a variety of volunteers and participants will provide useful advice and recommendations (“do’s and don’ts”).

For those who want to go further, additional resources and reading will be made accessible.

All over the different steps of the course, emphasis will be laid on the application of knowledge and skills to your local eco-system.

After validating all the quizzes, you will receive a certificate of completion.

The Teaching team

Your teacher and guide through the programme is Albrecht Sonntag, professor at ESSCA School of Management (Links to an external site.) in Angers, in Western France.

Albrecht Sonntag grew up in Germany, where he graduated in modern languages and literature, as well as educational sciences. He then moved to France, where he has been living and working for 30 years already. He obtained a French PhD in sociology and has dedicated most of his academic research to football’s role in society. Beyond his numerous publications, he was honoured to write a UNESCO report on racism and discrimination in football, downloadable here (Links to an external site.). Week after week, he suffers silently with VfB Stuttgart.

  • Virginie Ménard, instructional designer at ESSCA School of Management and facilitator of the course. Virginie holds a master’s degree in French language teaching and multimedia educational engineering. Before joining ESSCA, she worked for over 15 years as a teacher and teacher trainer in England, Spain, Peru and Turkey.
